(Sacramento, CA) – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California, representing over 270,000 home care workers in California, released the following statement from President Bill A. Lloyd to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act:
“On the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, SEIU California is proud to stand with people with disabilities in celebrating the passage of this groundbreaking civil rights legislation and in honoring the disability community’s history and leadership.
“The ADA not only helped break down barriers to education, employment, transportation and community involvement, it improved our communities by ensuring that people with disabilities can participate productively in our economy and our civic discourse.
“As we remember the long struggle to affirm the rights of people with disabilities, we also remember that our fight for equality and opportunity continues. At the very same time we gather to celebrate the progress made since the ADA’s passage, we must continue to work to rebuild California and protect and invest in vital services. In-Home Supportive Services are a cornerstone of California’s commitment to making sure parents, grandparents, and people with disabilities can live independently and productively.
“In-home care givers are proud to dedicate our lives to carrying out the promise of the Americans with Disabilities Act and to serving California’s communities by providing quality, cost-effective home care and we will continue working with California’s elected leaders to affirm the promise of the ADA and invest in Rebuilding California.”

SEIU California is a coalition of over 700,000 janitors, social workers, security officers, home care workers, school and university employees, healthcare workers, and city, county and state employees represented by SEIU local unions throughout California. We come together to build a better California by fighting to pass policies and elect candidates that benefit working families and advance the issues we care about: affordable healthcare, good wages, retirement security for all, a healthy environment, good schools and universities, and stronger communities. We believe that by working together we can build a California where working families can thrive again.
